This project provides a standalone, versioned implementation of Node.js's core stream classes (Readable, Writable, etc.) for use in any JavaScript environment. It allows developers to ensure consistent stream behavior across different Node.js versions and browsers, making it essential for library authors who need stable APIs. The package is maintained by the Node.js Streams Working Group.
